On a scholarship, he spent the next two years training with the Toronto Dance Theatre and Nikolais/Louis Dance Lab in New York City. He was invited to join the Nikolais Dance Theatre, which he joined under the guidance of master Alwin Nikolais, who became his mentor and with whom he toured the world. Between 1980 and 1987, he also studied scenic, costume, and lighting design.
Following his departure from the group, he began working as a solo dancer and choreographer, embarking on a journey into shamanic rituals and incorporating native myths and stories into his work.
He became the choreographer and co-director of the American Indian Dance Theatre, the first professional native dance group that combined traditional dance with a contemporary interpretation of myths and tales, after a decade of performing as a dancer.
Trujillo was born and raised by her parents in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
