A MASSIVE earthquake has rocked western Turkey - just 100km from a tourist hotspot popular with Brits.
The magnitude-6.5 tremor shook buildings in Denizli, damaging homes and causing some injuries, according to reports.
The earthquake was centred on the town of Bozkurt, in Denizli province, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said.
The country's Kandilli observatory reported that it was a magnitude-6.5 quake, which hit 6.2miles (10km) underground.
Bozkurt's mayor, Birsen Celik, told NTV television that the earthquake knocked down two houses in the town and that residents escaped with slight injuries.
Walls were cracked in several homes, and people ran out into the streets in panic, she said, adding that residents were being urged not to return to damaged properties.
Scores of houses were also damaged in the nearby town of Tutluca, but no one was injured there, according to its mayor, Hudai Karasahin.
MINARET TOPPLED
The quake meanwhile, caused the minaret of a mosque to topple in the village of Agdan.
The ground shook too in the neighbouring provinces of Antalya, Mugla, Isparta and Burdur, where people dashed out of homes.
Disaster officials said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 and struck at 2.25p.m. local time (11.25am GMT).
According to Earthquake Track, Izmir was shaken four hours before the Denizli event when a 4.6-magnitude quake struck at a depth of 13km.
The Istanbul-based Kandilli seismology centre said its records show today's quake was measured at 5.7.
