Plumlee attended Oak Grove High School, where he played football and baseball, and he grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. As a sophomore, he was named the Warriors’ starting quarterback.

John raced for 599 yards and eight touchdowns in nine games as a junior and tossed for 1,759 yards, 14 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The Clarion-Ledger named him one of the “Dandy Dozen.” He played in 27 games, batting.442 with 35 RBIs and 38 runs scored.
Plumlee, a four-star prospect, initially chose Georgia over offers from Auburn, Alabama, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Nebraska, Southern Miss, Tulane, Troy, South Alabama, and Mississippi State in the summer before his senior year.
In his final year, Plumlee completed 187 of 291 passes for 2,834 yards, 33 touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also ran for 1,444 yards and 19 touchdowns on 162 attempts, helping the team win the Southern State championship before falling to Horn Lake High School.
In his final three seasons of high school, he had 5,430 passing yards, 2,314 rushing yards, and 82 total touchdowns. Soon before National Signing Day, Plumlee de-committed from Georgia following the season to accept an athletic scholarship to play baseball and football at Ole Miss.
Plumlee was chosen as a 2019 5A/6A All-State in his first season after batting.411 with 39 hits, 45 runs scored, seven doubles, five triples, two home runs, and 24 RBI in 29 games.
